#1 BOBCAT LETTER TOP

The Honorable ___________
House of Representatives (or Senate of Pennsylvania)
State Capitol
Harrisburg, PA 17120

Dear Representative (Senator)___________________,,

After 30 years of being legally protected, the bobcat has been targeted as a new game species by the Pennsylvania Game Commission. There is no scientific reason to kill bobcats, since they are not overpopulated, nor do they threaten the environment. The exact number of bobcats in the state is unknown. The Pennsylvania Game Commission's plan to kill bobcats is
motivated by money from permits, instead of preserving wildlife and the environment.

Most of the Pennsylvania Game Commission funding comes from hunters and trappers, thus giving those groups total control over wildlife in our state. However, 93% of our state's residents are neither hunters nor trappers and we oppose bobcat killing as well as the use of the leghold traps. Use of the leghold trap is particularly barbaric and a cruel use of wildlife, which is a
gift that we should not squander.

For House of Representatives-I strongly urge you to oppose this ill-conceived plan. Please vote for House Bill 2534 requiring a three-year moratorium on bobcat hunting and trapping.

For Senate - I strongly urge you to oppose this ill-conceived plan. Please vote in favor of the resolution which stops bobcat hunting and trapping.

Sincerely yours,

To the Editor:

This fall, the Pennsylvania Game Commission is planning to start bobcat hunting and trapping so that hunters/trappers can "bag a bobcat in their lifetime". Bobcats have not been hunted or trapped legally for thirty years. There is no scientific reason to kill bobcats, since they are not overpopulated, nor do they threaten the environment. The exact number of bobcats in the state is unknown.

Bobcats are sentient, intelligent animals who play an important role in the ecosystem. By killing rodents, they control the spread of many serious disease such as Lyme disease, Toxoplasmosis, Hantavirus, and others. Bobcats also help control deer numbers.

Most of these bobcats will die in the agonizing grip of a leghold trap. Bobcats are elusive by nature, therefore, rarely ever seen to be hunted. Trappers are supposed (and this is not enforced) to check the trap every twenty-four hours, so an animal caught in the trap may lay in agony for a day or more before they are killed, often brutally by being shot, clubbed or stomped to death. Although the American Veterinary Medical Association has issued a statement condemning the use of these traps as inhumane and the European Community will not import pelts from animals that have been killed in leghold traps, our state game commission refuses to abandon this barbaric legacy of the past.

Because so many Pennsylvanians oppose this plan a bill (HB 2534) has been introduced in the State House of Representatives along with a resolution in the State Senate, asking for a moratorium on bobcat killing. Please contact your state legislators and tell them that you oppose bobcat hunting and trapping. #4 The Honorable Gaynor Cawley TOP

Dear Representative Cawley,

I am writing to thank you for introducing House Bill 2534 which requires a moratorium on bobcat hunting and trapping. As we all know, there is absolutely no ecological justification for killing bobcats other than the fact that the Pennsylvania Game Commission wants to sell more permits and placate those who want to "bag a bobcat in their lifetime."

It's time that the Pennsylvania legislature recognise that our state's
wildlife belongs to all Pennsylvania residents, not just a tiny minority of hunters and trappers.

Wildlife can be managed scientifically, responsibly and effectively but this will never occur within the Pennsylvania's current structure which allows hunters and trappers to dominate all decisions. The bobcat hunting and trapping plan is yet another violation of the public trust. After all, as so-called "stewards of the Commonwealth's wild birds and mammals for the benefit of present and future generations" the Pennsylvania Game Commission must be held accountable to the public.

Sincerely yours,

Dear Representative Smith,

I am writing to express my disagreement, in the strongest possible terms, with your support of the bobcat hunting and trapping plan. As we all know, there is absolutely no ecological justification for killing bobcats other than the fact that the Pennsylvania Game Commission wants to sell more permits and placate those who want to "bag a bobcat in their lifetime."

Dear Senator Boscola,

I am writing to thank you for introducing a resolution to halt the bobcat hunting and trapping plan. #7 House of Representatives or Senate of Pennsylvania TOP

The Honorable ___________
House of Representatives (or Senate of Pennsylvania)
State Capitol

Dear Representative (Senator)___________________,

For seventy years, elk have not been hunted in Pennsylvania. Their numbers did not significantly decline nor did they increase. Left unperturbed ,the elk population was naturally controlled. In the past ten years, in an effort to increase their own revenue and without regard for public safety or scientific environmental practices, the Pennsylvania Game Commission has intentionally manipulated elk and their habitat to dramatically increase elk numbers. Elk-vehicle collisions have increased due to these reckless practices and will continue to increase with the introduction of trophy hunting.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission's elk plan is motivated by greed, instead of a desire to preserve public safety and scientifically manage wildlife. Wildlife can be managed responsibly and effectively but this will never occur within the Pennsylvania's current structure which allows hunters and trappers to dominate all decisions. After all, as so-called "stewards of the Commonwealth's wild birds and mammals for the benefit of present and future generations" the Pennsylvania Game Commission must be held accountable to the public.

I speak for the other 93% of us who are not hunters and trappers and I strongly urge you to oppose this ill-conceived elk hunting plan.

Sincerely yours,

#8 Ban Hegins Pigeon Shoot TOP

Dear Representative or (Senator)___________________,

I urge to support House Bill 912, and it's counterpart in the Senate to ban pigeon shoots. The State Supreme Court has ruled that the Hegins pigeon shoot violates the state's animal cruelty laws. The legislature should follow in support of these laws and ban all pigeon shoots across the state forever.

For many years, the Hegins pigeon shoot caused Pennsylvania to be viewed as the bastion of animal cruelty. Now that Hegins is over, let us elevate our state's reputation by outlawing all such forms of animal cruelty.

Sincerely yours,
